What Is a Cross-Game?
Most of the time, when watching any media piece it’s easy for the viewer to judge a show by its past performance and build expectations on what they want to watch. This can lead to feelings of dismay when a show does not live up to expectations. Cross Game is a shounen that shows that a simple tale of baseball and love can have a beautiful ending.
The main characters of the show are all memorable, from the four street sisters to Ko’s best friend Daiki. This small cast makes the show memorable. They can bring an element of personality and atmosphere to each scene. Their character traits allow them to tackle the themes of death and love with ease and give them a more profound feel than you would expect from a typical shonen.
Cross Game is unique because it knows where to concentrate its attention. While the characters are all very well developed, there’s no tension or twists that happen in every episode. This allows the viewer to be able to fully enjoy the development of the relationships without being overwhelmed by the need for greater emotional tension or a plot that is constantly trying to shock the reader with new turns and cliffhangers. The fact that it avoids these kinds of pitfalls is the reason that makes Cross Game so wonderful, and something that the genre could use more of.
